Your mission, if you choose to accept it and please do, is to create a wall quilt that depicts one or more idioms of your choice.
Idioms are sayings that can originate from a literal meaning, but often do not make sense if taken literally. There are a number of websites that have many examples of English idioms, but you already know and use many idioms. Here are a few examples:
‘til the cows come home
it’s raining cats and dogs
let’s get down to brass tacks
on cloud nine
on his high horse
a fish out of water.
Another kind of idiom is a wise saying such as these which can be taken literally or metaphorically:
A stitch in time saves nine;
Look before you leap;
Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.
Size: No minimum size. The maximum size is a perimeter of 150”, any shape. For example it could be 35” by 40”. It would be fun to make it not rectangular. Use your imagination!
Techniques: Use any techniques you want as long as there are quilting stitches through 3 layers. You may want to use traditional piecing and/or applique, paper piecing, embroidery, collage, embellishments and so on.
Due Date: May 28, 2019 Quilt Guild Meeting day at 2:00 pm
Labelling the Quilt for Display: Please attach a folded over piece of paper on the lower right corner or part of your quilt. Write the idiom on it, under the folded part. That way viewers can guess your idiom and lift the folded paper to see if they are correct. Your name is not to be on the front of the quilt.
Voting:
Members will vote for their favourite idiom quilt at the May 28, 2019 guild meeting. The winner will receive a “Trip Around the World” (just kidding; some quilt pattern names might be considered to be idioms).
