"RAMBLING WAYS" WINS VIEWERS' CHOICE
Long time quilter Shelley Moore won Viewers' Choice Award at the 2023 Quilts on the Tay Quilt Show held July 7 and 8, organized by the Lanark County Quilters Guild, for this gorgeous appliqué quilt called Rambling Way, a pattern by Sharon Keightly and quilted by Janice Trudel.
I decided to make this quilt when I saw this panel with so many beautiful colours in it that I had to figure out what to do with it. If you look at the panel on the back, I used every single appliqué piece on the quilt (minus the stems)...by the end it was getting a bit tedious, but I enjoyed the colours so much, and the 3D effect they had. It make it worth it.
It took Shelley seven months to piece and appliqué the top, from March to September, 2020. Appliqué is Shelley's favourite quilting technique, she's a fan of the apliquick method and a bias tape maker for the stems. It's amazing what a dinosaur panel can be turned into!
Our two day show was a huge success! The Smiths Falls Community Centre Arena was jammed packed with visitors who strolled the aisles to view the 374 quilts on display, showcasing the talents of members of the Lanark County Quilters Guild. Shoppers had no shortage of options from the 18 vendors.
Our featured quilter Bev Cooper had a display showcasing her amazing quilts.
I have been quilting for 24 years and a member of the guild for almost 20. I love traditional quilts, my favourite techniques are machine piecing and hand appliqué, and my favourite fabrics are batiks, as well as Oriental, African and Australian Aboriginal prints, with lots of Grunge for backgrounds and accents. After more than 300 quilts, wall hangings, table toppers, placemats, totes and more, quilting is still my passion. My advice to any new quilter is to join a guild and take as many workshops as you can, the people are great and there are so many techniques to learn.
